Senqu Local Municipality LED unit showcase SMMEs led by young people during youth month

Posted: 28 June 2023

With the objective of recognizing and celebrating the remarkable contributions and accomplishments of young individuals, Senqu Municipality's Local Economic Development (LED) unit took the initiative of showcasing, with the aim of uplifting local youth-owned and operated Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) within the age range of 18-35.

These youth led SMMEs in Senqu Municipality exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit and drive for economic empowerment. Through their innovative ideas, quality products, and commitment to customer satisfaction, they are making a positive impact on the local economy.

Zakhe Youth Development
One of the highlighted SMMEs is Zakhe Youth Development, an agricultural cooperative established by five dynamic young women in Bikizana Village, located approximately 40 kilometers from Sterkspruit Town.
This cooperative, which currently employs 5 permanent, and 15 seasonal staff, aims to foster self-sufficient communities by promoting food security, commercializing crop production, maximizing profits, and generating employment opportunities. With a well-fenced farm and ample water supply, primarily sourced from the Orange River, the project currently cultivates potatoes (4 ha), cabbage (1 ha), and sugar beans (2 ha). Additionally, they operate a backyard garden (0.1 ha) that produces spinach and cabbage.
The cooperative supplies its products to renowned retailers such as Boxer and Choppies, while also catering to local demand within Sterkspruit for both household consumption and significant events, including ceremonies and funerals.

Zakhele Youth Development Co-op receives valuable support from Seda in the form of business plans and non-financial assistance. Furthermore, they are beneficiaries of the Social Development Grant Funding for cooperatives. Through collaboration with Senqu LM and various government entities, this project stands as a true testament to the growth and development of Senqu LM's local economy.

Barkly East Laundromat and Blue-Sky Cleaning Services
Another notable SMME is Barkly East Laundromat and Blue-Sky Cleaning Services, established in November 2019, founded and owned by Refeletsoe Thipa. Located in Boyce Nondala, Barkly East, the business provides laundry and deep cleaning services to households and local institutions. Their range of services includes washing, ironing, folding, cleaning blankets, deep cleaning furniture, mats, and car seats/covers. With a commitment to quality and exceptional customer experience, Barkly East Laundromat offers free pick-up and delivery options to their clients. Refeletsoe has plans to expand the business throughout Senqu, targeting hospitals, guesthouses, households, and institutions.

Sazi iAfrika
Sazi iAfrika, a textile and sewing company based in Sterkspruit, is another inspiring youth led SMME. Founded by Sazi Mnduzulwana in 2015, the company specializes in custom umbhaco, bag, and jacket designs. Currently located at Herschel Advice Office on 92 Van Tonder Street, the company has recently opened an office in Orange Farm, Gauteng. With a workforce of two individuals, Sazi iAfrika has been making significant strides in the industry.
Sazi completed the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Business Management training in 2022 and has been approved for a NYDA grant to acquire working materials and sewing machines. The business is also receiving support from SEDA, which is assisting with a viable and bankable business plan to enable further funding opportunities for the enterprise's development.
