SALGA and Water Research Commission launch a platform for water and waste innovators

Posted: 28 September 2020

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA), in collaboration with the Water Research Commission (WRC), will launch the Water Technology and Innovation Forum on 28-29 September 2020. The Water Technology and Innovation Forum is a partnership between SALGA and the WRC and aims to provide a collaborative platform for municipal partners to both share their innovation needs and bring about lasting partnerships that can conceptualise programmes, projects and raise the much needed funding for the sector’s water resources.

SALGA President Cllr Thembi Nkadimeng is scheduled to give an address on “value proposition on the Local Government Technology and Innovation”, and her address will be followed by Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu.

The launch of the Water Technology and Innovation Forum was prompted by a realization that there are several innovators daily who approach municipalities across the country on an individual basis with ideas around water management.  Under this new initiative, municipalities will now be able to assess, evaluate and support these initiatives at one-stop.

This will allow many innovators and water technologists’ opportunities to engage local government directly, under one-roof, giving them a platform for collaboration and possible partnerships.

In the current environment, it has also proved challenging to gauge the efficacy of the country’s water and waste treatment plant facilities without a shared platform by all the leading players in water and waste technology.

There is no doubt that well-coordinated water technology and innovation programs will contribute towards ensuring water security in the country.

The ultimate goal for the two-day session is to identify local government research and innovation needs and further accelerate development and uptake of research and innovative solutions through strategic partnership.

The launch of the Water Technology and Innovation Forum will be rolled out in two phases over two days.

DAY 1 PLENARY: Launch of the WRC/SALGA Technology and Innovation Forum

The first-day opening plenary features the ceremonial launch of the WRC/SALGA Technology and Innovation Forum has a strong focus on the value proposition and importance of technology and innovation as showcased in the SALGA Technology and Innovation Implementation Plan and is crucial in setting the tone for the two-day launch event.

DAY 2 PLENARY: Innovation Showcase
