SALGA Women’s Commission to elect new Chairperson at the upcoming Lekgotla

Posted: 25 November 2019

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Women’s Commission will host a Special National Lekgotla on 28 – 29 November 2019 at the Southern Sun OR Tambo Hotel, in Kempton Park, Gauteng.

Held under the theme: “25 years of Democracy: Growing South Africa Together for Women’s Emancipation in Local Government”, the gathering aims to discuss current issues and challenges pertinent to the Gender Equality Debate and Women Emancipation to inform the Programme of Action for Local Government. The Lekgotla will further enhance collaboration with stakeholders for the implementation of gender and women empowerment in local.

Key to the agenda of the Lekgotla is the election of the new Chairperson of the Women’s Commission.

The SALGA Women’s Commission (SWC) was established as part of a United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) initiative which aims to strengthen gender equality within African local governments.

The Commission was launched in 2010 as a mechanism to institutionalise advocacy processes through the voice of women in local government and to ensure progress while supporting the national, regional and global goals of women empowerment and gender equality and equity.

There was a need to coordinate, promote and advocate for gender-appropriate strategies and practices within member municipalities and feed into regional and continental processes, hence the establishment. As a result, the strategic objective of the Women’s Commission is to increase the representation and participation of women in local government to parity. This strategic objective is supported by a range of specific objectives that ensure that women’s representation and participation becomes more than merely a quantitative exercise.

Expected to attend are Provincial SWC Chapters as well as Chairperson of the Multi-Party Women Caucus (MPWC) from the district and metropolitan municipalities. Stakeholder’s such as the Department of Women; The Presidency; Commission on Gender Equality; as well as Civil Society Organisations will also be in attendance.
