SALGA is deeply concerned about recent outbreaks of violence against foreign nationals

SALGA is deeply concerned about recent outbreaks of violence against foreign nationals taking place in Atteridgeville, Mamelodi and other parts of Gauteng.

SALGA recognises the daily challenges of poverty, unemployment and crime, faced by our communities, but emphasises that our communities and lives will not progress through violence. SALGA is not only troubled by the danger to human life and the loss of property, but we are also concerned about the impact of exposure to violence on the most vulnerable in our society. Violence in our communities not only impacts on the individuals concerned, but causes serious psychological damage to children in the community who witness these incidents and are exposed to the turmoil.

SALGA urges communities to remember the values of Ubuntu, which shape our Constitution. Let us not forget the solidarity of African unity against apartheid and how together we were able to attain freedom for all. We must uphold the democratic principles that have underpinned out nation since 1994 and communicate our concerns and needs responsibly. SALGA would like to encourage Local Government leadership to continue to listen to the voices of our people and persist on the path for the betterment of our communities and the lives of all.

SALGA and its members have over the past years prioritised the goals of social cohesion and will continue to do so in our new 5 year Strategic Plan 2017 -2022. SALGA is committed to supporting local government and its leadership in its endeavour to build socially cohesive communities, driven by social inclusion and economic development that enables a better life for all.

SALGA will engage with the political leadership in the communities in which these incidents have occurred to provide advice and support to ensure that Local Government is doing its utmost to address the issues leading to these events.
