SALGA joins the world in commemorating 16th Days of Activism on No Violence against Women and Children

Posted: 25 November 2016

The 16th Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is an International Campaign designed to raise awareness about violence against women and children and takes place every year from 25 November to 10 December.

The commemoration is a way to symbolically link violence of all kinds against women and children to the violation of human rights.

South Africa adopted the campaign in 1998 as one of the intervention strategies towards creating a society free of violence, but violence against women and children still pervades our societies on a daily basis with total disregard to the laws, and the conventions that our country is signatory to.

The campaign is particularly relevant in SA where according to People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) “one in every four girl children is raped, as are more than 106 women every hour”.

Women and children’s rights continue to be violated despite the recognition in every convention that their rights are human rights. The National Development Plan Vision for 2030 provides that in order to realize the vision of safer communities there is a need to focus on the prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV), through strengthening of response, support, awareness raising interventions, communication and information sharing.

As part of the #365 Days Programme for No Violence against Women and Children, the Department of Women as the convener will be launching the National Dialogues on 25 November and roll them out in all nine provinces throughout 2017 under the theme “Count me in: Together Moving a Non-Violent South Africa Forward #365 Days”.

SALGA will be commemorating the 16th Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women & Children in partnership with Gender Links, Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), South African Women in Dialogue (SAWID), European Union (EU) and United Nations (UN) Women for parallel launches which will take place during 16th Days of Activism in order to lobby and advocate for multiple strategic efforts to empower women and end violence in South Africa.

SALGA calls for all South Africans to make a difference by committing themselves and persuading others to give support throughout the year to the call to stop the abuse of children and women.

SALGA also calls for all South Africans to take a stand against abuse and speak out against abuse and increase awareness.

SALGA Executive Director for Community Development Mirriam Lehlokoa calls for all South Africans to wear a white ribbon during the campaign and make a pledge to make a South Africa at peace with itself and a better place to stay.
