ADM launches the "End Gender Based Violence and Famicide" 100-day challenge

Posted: 17 May 2024

On 17 May 2024, Amathole District Municipality (ADM) Special Programmes together with Amathole District Rapid Response Team launched the "End Gender Based Violence and Famicide" (GBVF) 100 – day challenge in Calgary Conference Centre.

This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa, declared GBVF as a pandemic, an observation also supported by SA GBVF statistics report which states 'South Africa is one of the countries with the highest rate of GBVF more than the countries that are at war'.
ADM Special Programmes Manager ( SPU) Ms Thembisa Xundu-Kubukeli said the campaign aims to deal with the GBVF pandemic which has tremendously escalated. She further said ADM, particularly in Mnquma Local Municipality, has been identified as one of the hotspot areas with high rate of GBVF, alongside Nelson Mandela Metro and Matatiele Municipalities.

"THE END GBVF 100- day challenge campaign aims to end the scourge of GBVF in the district, "she added. Conveying the purpose and implementation plan of the END GBVF 100- day challenge, Technical Monitor for National Strategic Planning (NSP) on GBVF Ms Nobanzi Dana said the project is linked to ADM Rapid Response Team which will be responsible for piloting the project that aims to fight against GBVF by establishing strategies which will assist in curbing this pandemic.

"The campaign is a pilot project in the GBVF space that aims to fast track the implementation of the National Strategic Planning on GBVF. This is a uniquely structured and facilitated project which seeks to enable local teams to achieve their targets within 100 days"- said Dana.

Adding further, Dana said the primary objective of the 100-day challenge, is to localise the national strategic plan on GBVF as well as to "challenge all as multi- stakeholders by ensuring the established strategies are implemented in the district"- she said.

In-conclusion, ADM Rapid Response Team Chairperson Ms Xolelwa Gwayi said the rate at which GBVF is escalating is a result of the lack of commitment within the established support groups formed to fight against GBVF as well as government entities.

"The lack of commitment has allowed the scourge to rise, and we need to fight against that. I believe that GBVF should find expression in all government entities service delivery planning documents, including IDPs so that it is budgeted for. This will assist in implementing strategies derived from such sessions" - she closed.
