SALGA commemorates Mandela Day and Women's Month
On the 24th of August 2023, SALGA Mpumalanga in partnership with Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality commemorated Mandela Day and Women's Month by spending the day and handing over gifts to the hard-working women of Siyabuswa Secondary Vegetable Co-operative. The theme for Nelson Mandela International Day 2023 is "Climate, Food & Solidarity" and reflects some of the most urgent challenges facing people worldwide. This year SALGA focused on dismantling poverty and inequality by taking action against climate change and creating resilient food environments. This event also served as an opportunity to showcase the remarkable strides made by women and highlight the ongoing efforts to continue Nelson Mandela's vision of a just and equitable society. In her address, the Executive Mayor of Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality Cllr. Nomsa Mtsweni, encouraged women and the youth to continue using their gifts and talents, as well as identify opportunities that will enrich their lives and those of their communities. SALGA donated various items to Siyabuswa Secondary Vegetable Co-operative, including a circumference fence, gardening and irrigation equipment, water pump, as well as provided support to access a sustainable market through market access education and support by the Local Economic Development Unit.
