The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in Mpumalanga hosted its Provincial Members Assembly on the 6th and 7th of July 2023, at ANEW Hotel Witbank in eMalahleni. The Assembly was attended by delegates and stakeholders in different leadership positions within the local government sphere.

The SALGA Constitution (as amended) provides that "SALGA shall at least annually hold a meeting of members to be known and described in the notice calling such a meeting as the Provincial Members' Assembly. The Members' Assembly is charged with the responsibility of exercising SALGA's authority between conferences which take place every five (5) years".

In complying with SALGA's constitutional provisions, the Provincial Members Assembly, inter alia, considered various matters affects municipalities as well as reports from SALGA governance structures and other oversight bodies.

Delivering the Official Opening and Welcome Address, Cllr. Jesta Sidell who is the SALGA Mpumalanga Chairperson said that "Our local government is entrusted with the provision of essential services, the maintenance of infrastructure, and the promotion of economic development. We are at the forefront of addressing the immediate concerns of our constituents, from waste management to public safety, from education to healthcare. It is through effective local governance that we truly improve the quality of life for our citizens".

The Mpumalanga Assembly was also attended by the President of SALGA Cllr. Bheke Stofile, who spoke on the Update on the Key Policy Advances. "As the representative voice of local government, the National Executive Committee (NEC) has been deliberate in identifying various stakeholders as partners within the local government sphere. Recently, we met with the Minister of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and agreed that we should visit all nine (9) provinces together with the SALGA NEC to mobilise and work together as a team in order to change the local government narrative. Furthermore, assist municipalities across the country, especially those that are facing service delivery challenges", said Cllr. Stofile.

The Keynote Address at the SALGA Mpumalanga Provincial Members Assembly (PMA), which focused on key issues affecting local government on matters such as inadequate financial management, governance challenges, service delivery interventions, and consequence management was delivered by the Member of Executive Council (MEC) of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga, Honourable Mandla Msibi.
