The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in the Eastern Cape in partnership with Liberty and Buffalo City Metro Municipality participated in hands-on local-level projects which aim to contribute to the development of the children and youth who are the leaders of the future. This initiative is part of SALGA and Liberty's commitment towards the development of education holistically, as they believe that education is the corner stone of economic development and a means through which young people can be empowered.

This ongoing and striving partnership has seen the formation of the Winter School Shoe Drive Initiative in 2017. Together, SALGA and Liberty have donated over 5000 pairs of school shoes to 34 schools across the Eastern Cape, through the initiative.
Henceforth to commemorate youth month this year, SALGA, Liberty and the Buffalo City Metro Municipality visited the Sinomonde Primary School in Greenfields, East London on the 6th of June 2023 to donate 1056 school shoes to the learners. The official handover visit follows after a site visit to the school.

Liberty Provincial Director, Mr Solly Booi alongside SALGA Senior Advisor for Inclusive Communities, Ms Khosi Msimka and Buffalo City Metro Executive Mayor, Cllr Princess Faku handed over the shoes to the learners at Sinomonde Primary School.
"We are here today to handover these shoes to you my children, no one will not come to school because they do not have shoes especially in such a cold winter", said Mr Booi.

"You are the future presidents of this county, the next school principals, nurses, police and even the next mayors of this City," added Cllr Faku.
SALGA Senior Advisor had this to say while speaking and engaging with the learners, "Engaging yourselves in sport will enable you to be self-motivated and disciplined, these are the traits that can take you far in life. These are how some of our leading sports personalities have started out".

A donation of sanitary towels was also made to the school, with the aim that they be made available to any girl child who may need them in school.
