GSDM duo completes remote pilot licences

Posted: 29 April 2020

Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) recently celebrated one of its many proud moments where two of its employees Tebogo Tsotetsi and Sifiso Simelane recently obtained their Remote Pilot Licences (RPL) to allow them to fly the Drone Aircrafts in South Africa.

Not only is this a personal achievement to the two pilots after spending sleepless nights and hours of dedication to their studies, but also an achievement for the institution towards participating in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where The Internet of Things, Robotics and Digitals worlds are shaping our future.

It is crucial that government and local government in particular are not left behind as the country and the whole world is adopting and capitalising on the fast developing technology to perform its duties.

As a Community Driven District of Excellence and Development, we are proud to bring some of the cutting edge technology that will also assist and benefit our local municipalities.

Some of the functions that may be performed with Drone Aircrafts in municipal space include:

  • Contour mapping:  which is the foundation for all township design as it profiles the slope of a site and direction for storm water flow.
  • Infrastructure Assessment: drones are used in the assessment of infrastructure integrity of various infrastructure assets, ranging from electricity cables, electricity transmitters, roads and bridges. The use of drones in this instance will also assist with detection of early warning signs for maintenance requirements.
  • Bridges assessment: some parts of strategic infrastructure may be difficult for engineers to reach manually, therefore, making it difficult to assess them for structural integrity. Drone footage closes this gap and limits the safety risk on assessors and users of the infrastructure.

Other drone uses include gas detection and firefighting, especially during fire seasons.

Not only will these functions also support our local municipalities perform their functions efficiently, but they are also a potential revenue stream for us as the Gert Sibande District Municipality, as these services can be performed for other government departments and public at determined tariffs.

We will further ensure that more employees in strategic and necessary sections are also empowered to obtain these licenses.

Furthermore, we call on our local municipalities to take full advantage of this perfect storm of technologies which will pave the way for transformative changes and help us in our quest to deliver quality services to our people.

Gert Sibande District Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Muzi Chirwa and the municipal leadership congratulated the duo and applauded the management especially the Planning and Economic Development Department in GSDM for the initiative which shows that the District is improving on technological development and on supporting local municipalities.
