Posted: 29 November

Following the two-day robust and interactive National Women’s Lekgotla of the SALGA’s Women Commission (SWC) Cllr Flora Maboa-Boltman was elected as the new chairperson.

Cllr Maboa-Boltman is not new to SALGA as she served as one of the organisation’s deputy chairperson during the previous local government term which ended in 2016.

Cllr Maboa-Boltman is also a Provincial Executive Member in Mpumalanga and a Councillor at the Gert Sibande District Municipality.

The chairperson’s nomination went uncontested and was supported by all who were legible to elect. She was the only nominee for the position which displays the commission’s confidence in her to lead the way in advocating and lobbying for legislation of 50% representation of women in government and positions of power in general.

Cllr Moboa-Boltman will be at the forefront in the fight of gender equality and is posed to use the platform to ensure strengthened women representation and participation in the sector as well as intensify the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) while ensuring the safety and inclusivity of South African municipalities.

Concluding the proceedings, the SWC committed to improving the pace of implementation of the Employment Equity Targets concerning race, gender and disabilities in government, particularly local government. Moreover, responding to the GBV Report the commission also pledged to improve public awareness on pieces of legislation on criminal justice about the gender agenda.

The Lekgotla resolved to advocate for the inclusion of GBV in their IDPs reinforced by the conduction of community education on GBV.

The safety of women and children is one of the main concerns in efforts of ensuring the prevention of GBV, therefore, SWC agreed on strengthening safe and healthy environments for the improvement of gender equity conditions for vulnerable groups including the LGBTQI society.
