SALGA and SANTAM donate smoke detectors to assist in reduction of fatalities caused by shack fires

Posted: 20 July 2016

As part of making Nelson Mandela Day an everyday activity, SALGA in partnership with SANTAM on Tuesday 19 July, handed over 255 smoke detectors to the City of Tshwane.

The fire/smoke detectors were sponsored by insurance company SANTAM and are aimed to assist in the reduction of fatalities caused by shack fires. The Acting Executive Director for SALGA’s Community Development Directorate Mr Favourite Khanye said when the devises detect smoke the alarm goes off alerting people of any imminent fire danger.

SALGA Executive Manager in the office of the CEO Mr Seana Nkhahle handed over the devises to the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Councillor Nozipho Tyobeka Makeke. The City of Tshwane will hand over the 255 fire/smoke detectors to the residents of Phomolong/ Itereleng settlements, in Tshwane.

In the recent weeks about five people were killed by fire in the Plastic View informal settlement, in Tshwane.

Fire is seen as a serious hazard in shack settlements in South Africa. It has been argued that on average over the last five years, there were ten shack fires reported a day with someone dying in a shack fire every other day. In 2011 about 151 people were reported to have been killed in shack fires in Cape Town while in 2014 about 2 090 people were burned to death in the Gauteng province due to shack fires that sweep through informal settlements.
