SALGA will host the 2016 Special National Women’s Commission (SWC) Lekgotla in Johannesburg

SALGA will host a special National Women’s Commission (SWC) lekgotla from the
13th – 14th July at the Premier Hotel – OR Tambo, Gauteng.

The special lekgotla aims to bring together all the provincial chapters of the SWC and other women structures to offer a structured opportunity to address transformation challenges faced by women in Local Government with a view to developing solutions.

Other delegates invited to the event include female political leaders in local government as well as stakeholders from Government Departments, Civil Society Organisations and the Private Sector.

The Special National Lekgotla will be convened to consider the following issues:

  • The Terms of Reference of the SWC and progress with the implementation of the Programme of Action;
  • Key policy and legislative matters impacting women empowerment and gender equality in Local Government;
  • Share experiences on gender mainstreaming programmes in Local Government and
  • The handover report on the work of the SWC for the current term of office

The 2016 Special National Lekgotla will focus on progress with the implementation of the SWC Programme of Action and looking at strategies that will ensure that planning and implementation of gender mainstreaming programmes, projects at a municipal level are undertaken in an integrated, consistent and sustainable.

The women delegates will be addressed amongst others by the SALGA Deputy Chairperson Councillor Flora Maboa-Boltman, Chairperson of the Joint Multi-Party Women Caucus in Parliament honourable Mrs RMS Morutoa, Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Councillor Mondli Gungubele, Councillor Sindiswa Gomba and CoGTA Minister honourable Des Van Rooyen.

The Expected Outcomes of the Special National Lekgotla are;


  • Profiling the successes and progress made since the launch and establishment of the SWC in 2010
  • Identify priorities and make recommendations to inform the programme of action for the next term.
