SALGA Municipal Health Summit calls for national government to put Municipal Health Services at the Centre of Service Delivery

Municipal Health Practitioners are calling for national government to prioritise Municipal Health Services.

This comes after SALGA together with  South African Institute of Environmental Health (SAIEH), National Department of Health (NDOH), International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) and the City of Ekurhuleni successfully hosted the annual Municipal Health Services Summit at Garden Court, OR International Airport.

The two-day summit was held from 30 -31 January under the theme “Putting Municipal Health Services at the Centre of Service Delivery” and was attended by about 150 delegates consisting of SALGA Health and Emergency Services National Working Group Members, Councillors, Senior Managers and Environmental Health Practitioners from all the South Africa’s District and Metropolitan Municipalities and some local municipalities.

Also in attendance were representatives from learning institutions offering environmental health, Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), sector departments and Members of the National Working Group on Health and Emergency Service.

The summit discussed different matters impacting on the delivery of municipal health services by local government, which included:

  • Reflecting on resolutions taken at the previous summits
  • 2017/18 MHS audit outcome
  • Best learning practice on Norms and standards as well as the environmental health software
  • Back to basic approach
  • NHI
  • Listeriosis outbreak
  • The experience of environmental health graduates when doing community services

During the keynote address SALGA NEC Member Councillor Nkadimeng called for the national government to prioritise Municipal Health Services. Councillor Nkadimeng said SALGA will continue to support municipal health through various interventions.

When giving a message of support, President of the South African Institute of Environmental Health, Dr. Selva Mudaly said it is the duty of the Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) to conscientise politicians about environmental health.

The summit also broke into commissions to discuss various issues affecting Environmental Health in municipalities including;

  • Environmental Health in relation to NHI
  • Training and development of EHP’s
Roles and responsibilities of different spheres of government in the delivery of municipal health service
