Posted: 04 October 2017

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and United Cities and Local Government World Association (UCLG) President, Councillor Parks Tau recently attended the Intermediary Cities MEWA Regional Forum that took place on 21 – 22 September 2017 at the Nevsehir Haci Bektas Veli University Culture and Congress Centre in Nevsehir, Turkey.

The Forum was held to honour Councillor Parks Tau and high-level representatives of UCLG and UCLG-MEWA. It further assembled a broad spectrum of local leaders, academics, NGO representatives and local government experts worldwide.

The two-day event held various discussions focusing on four thematic areas which consisted of migration management, contribution to overall national development, the brand value of cities as well as localization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).

The Intermediary Cities Forum concluded with the UCLG-MEWA Intermediary Cities Declaration being signed, which has a sole purpose of strengthening intermediary cities ithe region and generating a specific implementation agenda of the SDGs and New Urban Agenda. The Protocols of Understanding was also signed between intermediary cities of the region to establish cooperation and collaboration among them for the successful implementation of the Declaration.

Highlighting the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals and New Urban Agenda Declaration, the Forum urged local leaders and stakeholders to focus on these items to ensure sustainable development in their cities. The Intermediary Cities MEWA Regional Forum is therefore seen as the first step taken for assuring a successful implementation agenda for the intermediary cities of the region to be set and monitored, through the construction of a new network and convening the Intermediary Cities World Forum to take place in 2018.
